Frédéric Chopin Ballades Nos. 1–4 Arnold Schönberg Six Little Piano Pieces op.19 Robert Schumann Fantasy in C Major, op.17 The concert program combines the most diverse sound worlds. Arnold Schönberg's Six Little Piano Pieces op.19 alternates with Frédéric Chopin's Ballades Nos. 1–4. Schönberg's miniatures from 1911 are radically modern: they consist of only a few measures, conveying a subtle expression through highly concentrated atonal harmony and precise structures. Each piece – from the delicate first to the slow, meditative middle to the rhythmically lively and dramatic finale – offers an intense listening experience. A powerful contrast is provided by Chopin's Ballades, which stand for the grand romantic gesture. They combine poetic melody with virtuosic piano technique and tell musical stories full of passion and lyrical beauty. The alternating juxtaposition with Schönberg's pointed sound language creates an exciting dialogue. Robert Schumann's monumental Fantasy in C Major illuminates another facet of romantic piano sound. The three-movement work spans a wide arc and is deeply imbued with Schumann's universal artistic conception, which merges music and literature into a unity. The American pianist Ben Kim is one of the outstanding interpreters of his generation. Since winning the 55th International ARD Music Competition, he has performed worldwide in renowned halls such as Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonie. He regularly collaborates with top orchestras, including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Leipzig, and Seoul. In the 2022/23 season, Ben Kim delighted audiences at the Franziskaner Concert Hall as a soloist with the Hungarian Chamber Orchestra. His recordings of Chopin, Debussy, Schumann, and Mozart have received international acclaim. His Chopin recording (Universal Decca) was highlighted as Editor’s Choice, and his album The First Vienna Concertos was awarded Critics’ Choice of the Year 2024.
