This program spans from the gallantly refined brilliance of the early classical period to the radical tonal language of Beethoven's late works. As if on a musical time journey, one can follow how personal expression and individual voice become increasingly distinct from the early Haydn to the late Beethoven. The overture to the opera L’amant anonyme by the dazzling Mozart contemporary Joseph Bologne opens the program and prepares the stage for cellist Julia Hagen for Joseph Haydn's C major concerto – a work that initially exudes much late Baroque spirit with its brilliant tone and alternations of solos and orchestral ritornellos, culminating in virtuosic boldness in the finale. If that is not the best prerequisite for Julia Hagen to beautifully bring out the “naturalness, warmth, vitality, and courage to take risks” of her playing. Ludwig van Beethoven's last string quartet, op. 135, composed almost completely in deafness, forms the conclusion: in the enlarged sound space of the string orchestra, it can unfold its intimate power even more impressively.
