Description

Today's program is dedicated to an unusual piano trio: oboe, bassoon, and piano. Only a few composers have originally written for this ensemble, which opens the view to new soundscapes through arrangements and transcriptions. Right at the beginning of the program, the two wind instruments merge in the arrangement of Joseph Haydn's piano trio into a sonic unity, sometimes accompanied by the piano, sometimes carrying its brilliant virtuosity, and thus new sound lights arise through the ideal complement of oboe and bassoon.

Following Haydn's trio are the Three Romances by Robert Schumann, one of the few solo works of the 19th century for oboe – a gem of intimate lyricism and poetic depth. The work became so popular that other instrumentalists quickly took a liking to it and adapted the romances for their own instruments.

In the Sonatina for oboe and bassoon, written by André Jolivet about a hundred years later, the sounds of French modernism are so individual that an adaptation is hard to imagine: Jolivet combines rhythmic energy with archaic-sounding lines in a clear sound language. Oboe and bassoon engage as two equal partners, freely unfolding their respective colors and characters, in an intense musical dialogue full of surprises and subtle irony.

A great contrast to this is Michail Glinka's Trio Pathétique: "I know love only through the misfortune it causes," the composer wrote in the score of the work. Originally composed for clarinet, bassoon, and piano, the work is often performed today with oboe and unfolds a particularly shimmering, lyrical expression in this ensemble. Glinka, founder of Russian national music, combines Italian cantability and dramatic gestures with romantic melancholy in this four-movement work. The trio is like a small opera without words: full of passionate episodes, lyrical moments of calm, and increasingly virtuosic climaxes.

Thus, the concert evening spans a wide arc – from classical elegance through romantic intimacy and French modernism to the passionate expression of early Russian romanticism. And time and again it shows how versatile and colorful the unusual ensemble of oboe, bassoon, and piano can be.
