Description

After the Communist takeover in 1949, Sina's father, the owner of a small oil mill, is classified as a 'black element.' He flees, and her mother is arrested and dies shortly after being released from prison. At fifteen, Sina is completely alone. Against all odds, she manages to study and becomes a teacher in the new China. With Deng Xiaoping, reforms and great hopes come in 1978. Like thousands of eager young people, Sina's daughter benefits from this: due to her good grades, Tanya receives a place at the prestigious Fudan University in Shanghai. Her dream: to become a journalist and perhaps even write books. But then she meets a young German in the library and has no idea that her life will soon change radically. In her novel «Kinder der roten Erde», Luo Lingyuan tells the story of her mother's life, and in the autofictional account of «Das fragile Glück der Harmonie», we learn how the author herself came to Germany. Thus, the life stories of mother and daughter lead us from a small village in Central China out into the world, with the backdrop of the development of the People's Republic of China from the bloody civil war of 1945-49 to the Chinese Dream of the future. LUO Lingyuan, born in China, studied journalism in Shanghai and has lived in Berlin since 1990. She has published nine novels in German and has received multiple awards. In 2007, she received the Chamisso Promotion Prize, in 2017 the Erfurt City Writer Literature Prize, and in 2026 she was the Beeskow Castle Writer. Since experiencing the fresh air of the Swiss mountains as a Writer in Residence in Arosa in 2023, she enjoys returning every year.
