Tom has a tough exterior but is essentially a romantic: "He once fervently believed that love would save him, but now he doubted it." Until Polly Gillespie arrives in Butte. She hopes for a better life through marriage to the strictly religious mining overseer Harrington, but questions her marriage even before it truly begins. With laconic wit, Barry unfolds in his novel "The Heart in Winter" (Liebeskind; translation: Thomas Überhoff) the love story of Tom and Polly, which inevitably leads to their joint escape through the Wild West of the USA. Kevin Barry is the author of novels and short story collections that have received numerous awards, including the International Dublin Literary Award and the Goldsmiths Prize. His novel "Night Ferry to Tangier" was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2019. He lives in Ireland.
