Cellar Talks III: How Do Good Surveys Come About?

Almost daily, new survey results are published. But how are they actually created? Why is it often enough to survey just a few randomly selected people to make statements about an entire population? And why do different institutes sometimes produce different results? Thomas Milic, a political scientist at the Liechtenstein Institute, provides insight into his daily work. Guest is Lukas Golder from gfs. bern. The conversation is moderated by Donath Oehri. A scientific survey begins long before the actual data collection. What questions are asked? How must the answer options be formulated? Whom do you survey at all – and how do you ensure that the results are as representative as possible? What does 'representative' actually mean? And: What impact did the methodological shift from telephone to online surveys have? From developing the questionnaire, through the sample, to analysis, each survey involves a multitude of methodological decisions. They show how surveys are created, where their strengths and limitations lie – and why good surveys are more than just the mechanical collection of opinions. About the 'Cellar Talks': On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Liechtenstein Institute, we invite you to take a behind-the-scenes look at research. In a casual conversation, researchers from the Liechtenstein Institute provide insight into their daily work. How does research work at all? What do researchers find exciting about the research subject Liechtenstein? What motivates our researchers, what concerns them? How did they find their way into their field? The series is moderated by Donath Oehri. As a municipal leader, he led the municipality of Gamprin-Bendern for over 24 years, from 1995 to 2019. In this role, he always had a direct connection to the Liechtenstein Institute: During the renovation of the current institute building, he was actively involved as chairman of the construction committee and delivered the opening speech at the building's inauguration in 1997. In his 15 years as a teacher (1980 to 1995) and subsequent time in office as a leader, his skills as a generalist were always in demand. He now brings these attributes to our 'Cellar Talks' forum as a moderator, when he will question our scientists and researchers in a completely unprejudiced manner, but also sometimes provocatively and with unexpected questions, in a completely 'unscientific' way.
