Katrin Hörnlein presents her book »Die Schnabels – Mutter, Vater, 17 Kinder«, together with Dunja and Orlando Schnabel. Siblings are very familiar with sharing toys, wearing each other's clothes, or arguing over the last chocolate bar. This also means having playmates or potential allies against their parents. Most people, with an average birth rate of 1.3 children, have at most one or two siblings. Not so the Schnabels. With 17 biological children, they represent an exceptional phenomenon of old West Germany. At the same time, many aspects of their family life are quite typical of West German family life from the 1950s to the 1980s. Katrin Hörnlein has spoken with them about their experiences and addresses questions that arise from such a family size: How do shopping and laundry work for so many people? Did they all go on vacation together? And how did growing up with many children shape the Schnabels? Katrin Hörnlein is an editor at DIE ZEIT and responsible for children's and youth literature. She also writes non-fiction books. On stage with her are two of the siblings: Dunja Schnabel (child 15) is an illustrator and has written a comic novel about growing up in a large family. Orlando Schnabel (child 9) is a graphic designer. Moderation: Markus Preiß
