Under the title "Literary" Quartet, this program combines three works whose scores are closely intertwined with biographical and literary narratives. The opening is Anton Webern's Langsamer Satz for string quartet. Composed in 1905 under the impression of a mountain hike with his later wife Wilhelmine, the work translates a private nature experience into a late Romantic, highly emotional tonal language. Sergei Prokofjew's 2nd String Quartet reflects a different form of landscape: the encounter with Caucasian folk music during his evacuation in World War II. The work reads like a travel diary and combines archaic folklore with the harsh motoric of modernity. The finale is Leoš Janáček's 1st String Quartet, explicitly subtitled after Tolstoy's story Kreutzersonate. Janáček here does not set a mere plot to music, but the psychological drama of an obsessive passion.
