Classical horizons from Haydn to Beethoven This program spans from the elegantly refined brilliance of early Classicism to the radical tonal language of Beethoven's late works. As if we were on a musical time journey, it is possible to trace how personal expression and individual voice become increasingly distinct from early Haydn to late Beethoven. The overture to the opera L’amant anonyme by the shimmering Mozart contemporary Joseph Bologne opens the program and sets the stage for cellist Julia Hagen to perform Joseph Haydn's C major Concerto – a work that initially exudes a late Baroque spirit with its brilliant tone and alternation of solos and orchestral ritornellos, ultimately culminating in virtuosic daring in the finale. If this isn't the best preparation for Julia Hagen to showcase the 'naturalness, warmth, vitality, and courage to take risks' in her playing. Ludwig van Beethoven's last string quartet, op. 135, composed almost completely deaf, concludes the concert: in the expanded sound space of the string orchestra, it can unfold its intimate power even more profoundly.
