Description

This concert is entirely dedicated to the Czech Republic. In 2015, Josef Špaček recorded a much-acclaimed CD of Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto together with the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of chief conductor Jiří Bělohlávek, along with works by Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček. Since then, the rising star among Czech violinists has been touring the great concert halls of the world with the violin concerto of his famous compatriot. For Špaček, it means "a fairly great responsibility to play these works – both to represent my country and to perform music that has already been recorded thousands of times." Nevertheless, he believes that Dvořák's work is somewhat underrated compared to the famous concertos by Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky and should be performed more often. The Musikkollegium Winterthur follows this by adding two more works by Antonín Dvořák to the program. The concert overture "Othello," rarely performed today, is based on the dark material from Shakespeare's play of the same name. The symphonic poem "The Water Goblin" is based on a Czech fairy tale, which is no less tragic. In both works, Dvořák closely adheres to the literary sources, both in form and in the implementation of speech melody in the themes and motifs.
