Description

Among the choral works of the concert repertoire, Johannes Brahms' "Ein deutsches Requiem" holds a leading position. Three things particularly stand out to Brahms' contemporaries: the undogmatic, ultimately non-denominational selection of the texts, the balance and coherence of the work's structure, and the sovereignty with which the composer managed to combine historical compositional techniques and then-new harmonies into a convincing unity. In addition to the orchestral version, Brahms himself also wrote a version for piano four hands, which can be used with reduced choir strength.
