Ah, youth! Who wouldn't want to be 14 again? Jane Mumford would rather not. She has never been into romantic "coming-of-age" stories. Because what could possibly be romantic about pimples, cluelessness, and pressure to perform? When she was a toddler, her world was still fun and magical, but as soon as she left elementary school, it became clear: over there in the adult world, terrible things await us like responsibility, prejudices, and not to forget: cursed love! The journey from child to "adult" (whatever that means) is what we call our teenage years, and they are full of dangers. Like not being invited to the right party. Or not having seen the new season of that one series. First world problems from which we never fully recover. Jane Mumford therefore spent her teenage years as a gothic rocker, because: against the fear of not belonging, the only help is not wanting to be part of it at all. Loneliness as self-empowerment! And maybe we never fully grow out of our teenage selves? Because all the strange rules of this society that she internalized in her formative years, she now has to painstakingly unlearn in her mid-thirties!
