Jakob Lehman conducts Sibelius

Description

Two debuts, a world premiere, a farewell, and powerful music from Finland: all this is offered by the penultimate subscription concert of the season. For the first time as a guest at the Musikkollegium Winterthur is conductor Jakob Lehmann, who has made a name for himself with historically informed performance practice. The program does not feature Gioacchino Rossini, whose oeuvre is his specialty, but two works by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Sibelius wrote the "Cassazione" in 1904 as a filler for a composition concert, but drew on significantly older material. Sibelius revised the piece several times but remained dissatisfied – "Bör omarbetas" ("should be revised") he noted laconicly in 1905. Unpublished during his lifetime, the "Cassazione" fell into oblivion and is still one of the rather rarely performed works of the Finn. Quite different is his fifth symphony: with its as memorable as effective final melody, which Sibelius is said to have been inspired by the flight of swans, it is one of his most popular orchestral works. But back to the debuts: also to be heard for the first time in Winterthur is a work by the Zurich composer and flutist Philippe Racine. Commissioned by the Musikkollegium Winterthur, he wrote a concerto for viola and orchestra. The solo part in this world premiere is taken by Jürg Dähler, long-time principal of the viola section, who is saying goodbye to active orchestral service with this concerto. Program
