Description
The First World War ended in 1918, Germany and Austria were on the losing side, and the victorious powers severely restricted the military and arms industry in these countries. Development and production of weapons were quickly outsourced to neutral countries to build a shadow armament. These shadows also fell on Switzerland, including Solothurn and Zuchwil. On the initiative of local politics and business, with the participation of the German Rheinmetall, the Solothurn Arms Factory AG was founded in 1929 in the premises of a former cartridge factory in Zuchwil. This piece of contemporary history is re-examined with historical documents, objects, and visual material. Using the example of the Solothurn Arms Factory, the Museum Altes Zeughaus presents an era that still has social, political, and military repercussions in Switzerland today.
