Description
To conclude the season, the focus is on Brett Dean, a composer who uniquely combines contemporary writing for strings with engagement with tradition. It begins with Intimate Decisions for solo viola. The short piece feels like a concentrated monologue: close, searching, entirely focused on the individual sound and its transformations. Even here, a compositional thinking is evident that develops tension from the smallest gestures. With the arrangement of the third movement from Beethoven's String Quartet op. 59 No. 1, this engagement with tradition becomes openly apparent. Dean transfers the quartet music to a larger string sound without smoothing its inner drive. Beethoven remains recognizable but appears in a new perspective. Dean's Short Stories. Five Interludes for String Orchestra continue this idea. Each of these five pieces has its own character, its own movement, its own sonic situation. Together they do not form a closed narrative but a sequence of moments in which the string orchestra repeatedly shows itself differently. To conclude, Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto is presented in a version for piano and strings. Especially in this reduced setting, the delicacy of this work becomes particularly clear. The dialogue between solo instrument and ensemble feels more immediate, permeable, chamber-like. Thus, one of Beethoven's great piano concertos appears not as a monumental capstone but as music of great inner mobility.
