I AM MY MOTHER

Description

Andreas Schertenleib's mother is 95 years old. She is the last living witness of a family history that was long kept silent. Soon, no one will be able to tell it anymore. So Andreas begins to ask: About his grandmother, who died in psychiatry at 49. About his grandfather, whom his mother hated as a child. About the silence that has been passed down in his family from generation to generation - and that he knows from himself. On stage, Andreas wrestles with this heritage. He quotes from letters and from his mother's resume. He slips into the roles of his grandparents, gives a voice to the silent grandmother, and plays what might have been. An empty chair represents the mother on stage. She is not there but present – she comments on the events and is allowed to say what can be told and what cannot.
