Joseph Haydn Piano Trio in E minor, Hob. XV:12 Johannes Brahms Piano Trio No. 2 in C major, Op. 87 Maurice Ravel Piano Trio in A minor When The New York Times praised the Horszowski Trio as "smooth and convincing" and The New Yorker celebrated it as "the most impressive American ensemble of recent times," an extraordinary international career began. Since its founding in 2011, the New York-based ensemble has established itself as one of the defining forces in the current chamber music scene. Named after the legendary pianist Mieczysław Horszowski (1892–1993), the trio carries on his legacy of musicality, integrity, and humanity. The connection is very personal: Rieko Aizawa, the ensemble's pianist, was Horszowski's last student at the renowned Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Today's program reflects the enormous stylistic range and interpretative sovereignty for which the trio is appreciated worldwide. It opens with Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio in E minor, a work of noble restraint and subtle drama, exemplifying Haydn's ability to engage the piano in a witty dialogue with the strings. This is followed by Johannes Brahms' Piano Trio No. 2 in C major. Brahms himself held this work in high regard and wrote to his publisher: "You have not yet had such a beautiful trio from me." With its symphonic structure and dense motivic work, it demands the "intensity of expression" and "finest tuning" that the press attributed to the Horszowski Trio after its acclaimed tour in Germany in 2022. The grand finale is Maurice Ravel's Piano Trio in A minor. Ravel is among those composers with whom Mieczysław Horszowski had a personal connection—a tradition to which the ensemble feels particularly committed. The work, composed in 1914 under the impression of the impending First World War, is considered one of the highlights of the genre. It requires the performers to exhibit the highest virtuosity and a sensitivity to the shimmering timbres that the Horszowski Trio masterfully unfolds in its "exemplary interpretations" (Gramophone). The trio's commitment extends far beyond the classical core repertoire. It passionately advocates for contemporary music, collaborates with contemporary composers, and dedicates itself to monumental works of modernity. This curiosity and seriousness also flow into the educational work of the three musicians.
