David Mayoral - Percussion The program “Songs of the South and the North” builds bridges between the music of the Mediterranean basin and that of Scandinavia.
The sea plays an essential role: it inspires the songs of sailors and travelers. Men and women sing both old and new songs of journeys and wandering, of nostalgia and love, of separation, hope, and reunion.
We discover the same rhythms and tonalities in a Catalan folk song and a Norwegian melody, the same mode in a Sephardic song and a tune from the North. A ballad tells the story of the love between a young girl from the Mediterranean coast and a northern prince.
No doubt it was the countless journeys of the Vikings, the Catalans, the Scots, and the Sephardim—peoples who carried stories, dances, and music—that built these fragile yet eternal bridges between the North and the South.
