Heaven and Hell In unsettling times, people look up. They do this even though many of them have never tasted an oblate or entered a confessional. Looking heavenward nourishes hopes for comfort and eternal life. But invoking heavenly powers can also have the opposite effect. This is what happens in Ödön von Horváth's comedy ‹Himmelwärts›, where individuals striving for the highest honors unexpectedly find themselves equipped with a general subscription for eternal wandering between the gates of heaven and the gates of hell. Christoph Marthaler and Laurence Cummings compose the cycle of rejoicing and lamenting with spiritual cantatas and evening music by the Danish-German composer whom Bach admired like no other: Dietrich Buxtehude.
