Program: Leoš Janáček (1854 – 1928): Suite für Streichorchester Fazıl Say (*1970): Konzertstück für Klavier, Trompete und Streicher (UA) Dmitri Schostakowitsch (1906 – 1975): Konzert für Klavier und Orchester Nr. 1 in c-Moll, op. 35 für Klavier, Trompete und Streicher Antonín Dvořák (1841 – 1904): Serenade für Streichorchester in E-Dur, op. 22 Shortly after completing his opera Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, which is popular with audiences but will cause a major Stalinist backlash against him, Shostakovich begins a tumultuous concerto for piano and trumpet. Everything is included: virtuosic effects, crashing music-hall and circus, Russian romanticism, neoclassicism, and bold experiments. His musical language is still full of wit and almost rowdy, far from the sarcasm of later years. In all the splendor of his talent, the young star Shostakovich toys with a theme by Haydn, briefly bows to Beethoven, flashes virtuosities à la Liszt, awakens romantic emotions, and immediately mocks everything again. Dvořák's string serenade comes across as sonorous, cheerful, and full of Bohemian melodies: music of a very good-humored mid-thirties man full of energy, unaware of his later fame. As a complement, a new work by the double talent Fazıl Say, dedicated to his not-so-secret love, the trumpet.
