Description
The novel Heimsuchung by Jenny Erpenbeck, published in 2008, tells the story of a house by a lake in Brandenburg. In this house live the most diverse
people. However, none of them are allowed to live permanently in the beautiful
house by the lake and call it home. Despite their differences, they have one thing in common. They live in Germany of the 20th century. A time marked by two world wars, fascism, flight and expulsion, the division into
GDR and FRG, as well as the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification. The consequences of these times are reflected in the personal
fates of those who lived through them. The residents are overwhelmed by the impacts of German history,
political events, and personal tragedies, which
consume and haunt them. They are searching for a homeland, for a safe
and stable home, yet are constantly fleeing at the same time. The story of the land on which the house is later built begins with the large landowner and his four daughters, he is the first owner of the land. He sells his land to a fabric manufacturer from Guben and to an architect from
Berlin. Thus, the story of possession and loss unfolds. A production of the Badische Landesbühne
