Description

The Heeresmusikkorps Ulm is a symphonic wind orchestra of the Bundeswehr with 50 trained musicians. The band performs over 130 appearances annually at civilian and military events. It primarily tours the southern German region and is also active nationwide and internationally. Since January 2022, Major Dominik Koch has been the director. A core task of the Heeresmusikkorps Ulm is to accompany military events such as parades, serenades, or the Grand Tattoo, as well as troop support during overseas missions. Another focus is charity concerts. In spring and autumn, the orchestra performs its program in hall concerts; additionally, it performs in summer open-air stages and in churches during Advent. Over the past 25 years, more than 1.5 million euros have been raised for charitable causes in this way. Music shows featuring choreographies to march and entertainment music complete the broad range of tasks. Besides the large symphonic wind orchestra, soldiers also perform in various chamber music ensembles or the traditional Egerländer ensemble. The Heeresmusikkorps has a special relationship with its garrison city Ulm and its partner city Neu-Ulm. Regular performances in the Danube cities include parade concerts, concerts in Glacis Park, the Advent concert at the Pauluskirche, support for Aktion 100.000 and Ulmer hilft, as well as the commemoration of Volkstrauertag. The band’s specialty is the preservation of traditional march music, but equal attention is given to the development of original wind orchestra literature. Arrangements of classical works, modern entertainment music, and top soloists create a varied program that regularly impresses audiences. Highlights of the orchestra's history include numerous CD productions and television recordings. There are also many joint concerts, including with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Ulm, the Ulmer Spatzen Choir, and other domestic and international bands. Thanks to regular participation in international military music shows, the band has performed on almost all continents. Promoting amateur music and artistic Nachwuchs is an important concern of the Heeresmusikkorps Ulm. In addition to workshops and performances at the BwMusix music competition, there have been various collaborations, such as with the Mannheim University of Music, Rundel Music Publishing, and various wind music associations. Young people often take the opportunity to complete their voluntary military service within the ranks of the professional orchestra to gain an in-depth insight into orchestra life. Students also frequently inquire about employment opportunities in military music through internships. Founded in 1956, the orchestra was initially stationed in Ellwangen/Jagst. A few years later, the location moved to Ulm, where it became part of the 10th Panzer Division as "Heeresmusikkorps 10." In 2013, the unit was subordinated to the Joint Support Service and has since performed under the name "Heeresmusikkorps Ulm."
