Description
Origin circles, language shapes memories, and sometimes the feeling of being different remains. What connects us, what sets us apart, where do we feel at home and when do we feel foreign? With these questions, director Hao Hohl embarks on a cinematic journey into language, origin, identity, and the search for belonging. The people she accompanies move between dialects, cultures, and traditions. Some have lost their homeland, others carry a heavy family heritage, and some feel foreign in their own country. They all share a quiet restlessness – a feeling that probably everyone who has ever felt not quite belonging in life knows. Writer Pedro Lenz humorously recalls his childhood among dialects. Composer Charles Uzor, who came from Nigeria to Switzerland as a child, makes his longing for home palpable. Kendra Alder, heir to a traditional Urnäscher musician family, struggles with expectations that are hardly achievable. Veronika Matiashenko, who fled Ukraine before the war, literally forms a new foundation with chainsaw and chisel. Roland Inauen, former Landammann of Appenzell, reflects on language borders and tradition, while Toni and Theres Durrer from Nidwalden, like Hao himself, share the feeling of being in between.
