Dominic Oppliger reads from his new dialect novel «Gschtüel» – a fantastic autofiction set in Baden in the 2000s. Afterwards, screening of Heinz Winter's «Abschied vom Gstühl» (2009). Baden, sometime in the 2000s. A nameless narrator searches for his place in a city that has remained foreign to him until the old Gstühl area comes to life. There he finds a home, like-minded people, and Julia: mysterious, attractive – and soon gone. When he meets her again months later, she is different. Gstühl is heading towards demolition, disturbing encounters accumulate, and the same strange book with the theories of the Baden spa doctor Pilzbarth keeps appearing: «The Overcoming of Being Human». Dominic Oppliger writes in «Gschtüel» about growing up and the quiet fear of one's own development. Fantastic elements and fiction effortlessly intertwine with real places. The result is an atmospheric novel that remains suspended – between reality and fantasy, between what is and what can be. Dominic Oppliger tells with ease and melancholy and a language that grabs you before you even notice. «Gschtüel» is a fantastic dive into a decade in search of what we can become. Or must become. At the book launch at the Royal, Dominic Oppliger reads from the new book in his unmistakable style and brings the old Gstühl area to life in the mind's eye, before the film «Abschied vom Gstühl» (2009, duration: 60’) by Heinz Winter provides factual images and voices from the mid-2000s. Dominic Oppliger (*1983) studied social work and transdisciplinarity in the arts, lives in Zurich, and works independently as an author, musician, artistic advisor, and writing coach. His dialect novel «giftland» was awarded a Swiss literature prize in 2024. In 2025, «chönnti» (cpress) and the fantasy story «Helsinki» (Der gesunde Menschenversand) were published.
