New colors, new worlds: animals as a source of inspiration for artistic expression around 1900.
Therefore, the next special exhibition of the SAMMLUNG HANS BÄUMLER, Hohenems, which is created in cooperation with the MAK, Vienna, is focused on this theme. From September 26, 2026, to January 6, 2027, the private museum in Hohenems will again combine a special exhibition with the exhibits from the two permanent collections, SAMMLUNG KUNST and SAMMLUNG NATUR, the two passions of founder Hans Bäumler. Experimental animal images from A to Z:
The autumn exhibition is dedicated to the animal image – anything but naturalistic, in great variety, full of surprises, and in unusual combinations: From A like "Monkey Theater" to Z like "Smoky Goat". It features high-caliber paintings from the SAMMLUNG KUNST such as the eponymous "Green Cow" by Franz Marc, "The Circus Rider" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and "The Dog" by Emil Nolde. In total, the exhibition displays around 75 works. "We showcase the diversity and experimental spirit of the animal image in the first quarter of the 20th century. Many unjustly forgotten artists are prominently featured," announces curator Tobias G. Natter. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly illustrated catalog with guest contributions from Thomas D. Trummer (Director of Kunsthaus Bregenz), Bernhard Denscher, Michaela Reichel, and Tobias G. Natter.

General Information

The exhibition "Green Cow and Goat" at the Hohenems private museum showcases the diversity of the animal image around 1900. In cooperation with the MAK, Vienna, works by renowned artists are presented, interpreting the animal image in unconventional forms.
