Description
by Ödön von Horváth and Lukas Kristl Elisabeth is unemployed and penniless. To be able to work, she needs a business license. To obtain the license, she needs money. In her desperation, Elisabeth tries to sell her future corpse to the anatomical institute. A compassionate preparator gives her the amount, as the institute does not buy bodies of living people. When he finds out that she is using it to pay an open fine, he reports her to the police. There, Elisabeth meets a policeman who wants to marry her and regularly gives her money. When he learns of her previous convictions, he also drops her. Elisabeth's race through the depths of capitalism ends in existential nothingness. Horváth's play raises the question of who one is when one has neither money nor work, neither status nor shelter. What roles do social, economic, cultural, or symbolic capital play in our society? What do we believe in, whom do we love, what do we hope for? Elisabeth faces these questions in this "folk play in seven scenes," directed by Nadine Schwitter.
