«Gillian White – Play with Space» – Art Museum Eduard Spörri

On August 31, 2025, the special exhibition "Playing with Space" opens at the Eduard Spörri Art Museum, focusing on the work of Gillian White (*1939). The English-born artist rose to prominence in Switzerland with large-scale works for public spaces and commissions for art in architecture. After a period of mostly monumental sculptures that shaped architecture and landscapes, she created rigorously conceived and playful small-scale sculptures. In addition to her sculptural work, however, Gillian White devoted herself to painting and drawing. "Playing with Space" transcends techniques and focuses on White's idiosyncratic approach to surfaces, forms, colors, and spaces. Spatiality can appear as an illusion that disrupts the rational, even if it is merely a small blue dot outside the norm.

The retrospective is conceived as a partner exhibition in cooperation with the Swiss Icon Museum / Museum Burghalde in Lenzburg. The exhibition in Lenzburg opens in December 2025.

The Eduard Spörri Museum in Wettingen exhibits contemporary art in indoor and outdoor spaces. Based on the artistic work of the Swiss sculptor Eduard Spörri (1901-1995). Eduard Spörri (1901-1995) left behind a broad oeuvre of sculptures, reliefs, paintings and drawings inspired by the French sculptors Auguste Rodin and Artistide Maillol. Special exhibitions, readings, theater performances and concerts shed new light on Eduard Spörri's artistic work and stimulate dialogue across genres, formats and content. Around 100 works of art are visible in public spaces, mainly in Aargau. "Vo Ängel, Blueme und Stärne" is the motto of the recently initiated children's trail from Wettingen Monastery across Wettingen, past sculptures, playgrounds, parks and fountains to the museum.
