Description
A social drama about repression and liberation. Helene Alving sacrificed everything to maintain the appearance of an impeccable family. She endured an unhappy marriage. She suppressed her true love. She covered her husband's immorality until his death. She even gave away her son to keep him away from the father's bad influence. Yet, the ghosts of the past hold her tightly in their grip. In Anna Bergmann's production, however, the ghosts of patriarchy haunt not only Helene Alving but also her maid Regine. In atmospherically dense, surreal tableaux, the director tells of female strategies to free oneself from violence and inherited and experienced constraints.
