Description

In the play by dramatist Henrik Ibsen and his well-known generational piece from the 19th century, the past is full of ghosts that haunt us in the here and now, catch up with us, and bring us death. At least, this is what Oswald learns in the play of the same name, who sought his fortune as an artist in Paris. His mother wanted to distance him from his origins and his violent father — yet, in the end, both must realize that Oswald has long carried the "seed of evil" within him and is doomed because of it. Can I even refuse an inheritance, free myself from it, and never look back? Ghosts remain ghosts; they cannot be buried, they return whether we want them to or not. But perhaps we are also wrong to condemn them all collectively — maybe, considering the state of the world, there are other ghosts that wink at us from more progressive and liberal times? What about the hard-won women's rights, the vibrant LGBTQIA+ community, the lush theater landscapes, the high taxes on high wages, disarmament after the Cold War, and the fundamental promise of peace? But can I really pick only the cherries, the good spirits, from my inheritance? Doesn't an inheritance also always include the negative ghosts that we are all too eager to overlook and suppress? Rebekka David and her team delve deep into Ibsen's original text and prepare to accept an inheritance and examine its relevance today.
