Description

Towards the end of the 19th century, composing symphonies was no longer a given. Composers like Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner challenged the primacy of the symphony with new concepts that increasingly integrated extra-musical programs into the works. Carl Nielsen, one of the most famous Danish composers, still wrote symphonies, six of them in fact. Occasionally, he experimented with a program, for example in the second and fifth symphonies; however, this had little to do with the new German understanding of program music à la Wagner. In his first symphony, on the other hand, you can hear clear references to Nielsen's great role model: Ludwig van Beethoven. As in Beethoven's fifth symphony, Nielsen relies less on large melodic gestures and more on a concise form derived from small, rhythmic motifs.

Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra is entirely symphonic in character. In a finely crafted dialogue structure, the wind instruments, alongside the two solo voices, play a significant role. Mozart opens the first movement with majestic E-flat major chord strikes, as if to draw the curtain on a spectacular performance. The expectation thus created is deceived, as the two solo instruments barely perceptibly blend into the action, which is almost predictable with Mozart. The direction of this wonderful program is taken by Nils Erik Måseidvåg. After two intense years in Winterthur, he will be seen one last time as assistant conductor on the Stadthaus stage – an opportunity not to be missed!
