Description

"Freedom! – a musical approach" focuses on six songs on the theme of freedom and takes visitors on a journey through various freedom discourses. Everyone is invited to express their own wishes for freedom in a soundproof soundbox. From a selection of these wishes, the museum will compile and publish a new freedom song.

In addition to preserving tangible cultural heritage for future generations, museums also have the task of researching and making intangible cultural heritage visible. For the theme of freedom, the Burgdorf Castle Museum intensively engaged with historical songs and the living tradition of singing. An important aspect of developing the exhibition was the collaboration with the bearers of intangible cultural heritage – choirs and bands from Burgdorf. They helped decide what would be seen and heard in the exhibition and enrich this year's Schlosskultur program with several concerts (see https://schloss-burgdorf.ch/veranstaltungen).

The exhibition explores the ever-relevant struggle for freedom under the aspects of faith, censorship, myth, lockdown, and flight, presenting six songs connected to the region's history:

"TDME," Antytila, 2019, sung by the choir of the Ukrainian welcome classes Burgdorf

The participants describe in short audio texts what engaging with the lyrics triggered in them and what singing means to them in terms of freedom; there are also brief explanations of the historical context. An important element of the new exhibition is the specially designed soundbox where visitors can record their own wishes for freedom – whether singing, whispering, yodeling, or shouting. From these wishes, Burgdorf musician Tim Rebmann, responsible for the recordings, will develop a new freedom song during the exhibition. The exhibition will be on display at Burgdorf Castle for the next five years.

General Information

The exhibition "Freedom! – a musical approach" takes place at Burgdorf Castle and celebrates the 750th anniversary of the Handfest of 1273. It showcases songs that illuminate various freedom discourses and invites visitors to share their own wishes. The program also includes concerts with local music groups.
