French Elegance - Born from Ruins

Description

French elegance did not arise in splendor, but from a time of upheaval: After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, a new, sensitive musical culture full of intimacy, poetry, and subtle expressive power developed in the Paris salons. The elegant mélodies of Reynaldo Hahn exemplify this era – with transparent sound, fine line work, and a sensitive play between words and music. Charles Martin Loeffler’s "4 Poèmes op. 5" also move within poetically melancholic sound worlds, inspired by Fauré and already harmonically bolder. A striking contrast is set by Camille Saint-Saëns’ famous "Danse macabre": a grotesque dance of death full of irony, wit, and refined sound painting. At the center of the evening is finally a chamber music masterpiece by Gabriel Fauré – music of enchanting intimacy and clarity. Thus, the concert evening unfolds a colorful panorama of French sound art between elegance, melancholy, and fine musical esprit.
