Description
Giotto's cycle of images (around 1290–1300) in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi has shaped the artistic and human image of Saint Francis to this day. With his depiction, Giotto shaped the image of the Saint up to our time. Of course, Francis was also depicted countless times in the following centuries, with stigmatization being particularly prominent. Besides the artistic evaluation of the images, we ask to what extent art – in addition to the transmitted texts – can deepen our image of the 'Poverello'.
