Franz Hohler once again demonstrates himself as a master of subtle shifts in "Der Schrei des Elektrikers": His short stories are small wonder chambers of everyday life, where the ordinary suddenly tilts into the bizarre. A bird exists only when it is not seen, a whale lies in the animal hospital, freight trains carry the eternal burden of functioning, and at night cranes shine like silent giants over the city. There are also a clattering iron dog, stuttering toothbrushes, suction excavators, dwarf planets, and a cat at the deathbed. Hohler's world is absurd and precise at the same time, full of quiet irony and surprising poetry – and just in that way, as funny as it is clever.
