Description
Centuries of use and later abandonment make medieval castle ruins in Graubünden a historically significant heritage. The fact that these structures still exist in such numbers is not solely due to their massive construction; often, varying working conditions contribute to the preservation of these now purposeless "properties." When architects are involved, they often venture into new territory. This concerns the construction task but also the cooperation with different stakeholders. The restoration and development of Burg Neu-Aspermont in Jenins follows a nuanced protection concept, which not only provides for maximum protective measures but also, in parts, limits itself to minimal conservation interventions, consciously accepting the decay in favor of the "experience value" of the ruin. The new development transforms the castle from an inaccessible monument into an experiential space – this is always at the focus of the project development. It is not the strong presence of the new elements but the poetic effect of the existing structure that makes the qualities of the castle ruin immediately perceptible. Lecture by Esther Elmiger, followed by a panel discussion with Valentin Groebner, moderated by Martin Tschanz.
