Further Developing Federalism - Six Ideas for Switzerland of Tomorrow

Federalism is an important part of Swiss democracy and identity. But how well is our federal system prepared for the challenges of the future? In which areas are new ideas and approaches needed? And where can we rely on proven solutions? The Neue Helvetische Gesellschaft Schweiz (NHG) discusses these questions as part of the first edition of their political writings series. Six authors address specific challenges and possible reform approaches for our federal system. Their texts focus on topics such as digitalization, referendum, human rights, multilingualism, climate finance, and cohesion. During the discussion evening at the Polit-Forum Bern, the six contributions will be presented briefly. Afterwards, participants will discuss the proposed ideas in World Cafés, share their perspectives, and consider how Swiss federalism could further develop. The main thoughts and insights will then be summarized in a plenary session. The evening begins with a short input from Rainer Lüscher, President of NHG Schweiz. To conclude, Regierungsrat Markus Dieth, President of the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK), will appreciate the discussion and the perspectives shared. An evening for everyone interested in the political future of Switzerland – and who want to not only preserve but also further develop federalism. This event is organized in collaboration with the Neue Helvetische Gesellschaft Schweiz NHG and is part of the Federalism Exhibition, which will be open until the end of 2026 at the Polit-Forum Bern and is co-financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).
