Description
Switzerland is not a federal exception. About 25 countries worldwide have been federal for a long time or due to recent demands for self-determination and greater independence. For example, Canada. The Canadian and Swiss federalisms have different origins. How do these origins influence federalism? What are the similarities and differences? What are the reasons for the secession movements in Alberta and Quebec? How does current US politics influence federal practice in Canada? After a presentation by Johanne Poirier (McGill University, Montreal), Sean Müller (University of Bern) and Johanne Poirier will discuss these and other questions. This is part of the Federalism Exhibition, which can be visited until the end of 2026 at the Polit-Forum Bern and is co-financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). The event will be held in French and English (without translation) and is free of charge.
