Description

He is currently one of the most sought-after clarinetists, touring the major concert halls of the world, and the New York Times praises his virtuosity and musicality, which "has never been surpassed by any clarinetist – or even instrumentalist." Now Martin Fröst makes his debut with the Musikkollegium Winterthur with HK Gruber's "FINTango." Gruber understands this clarinet concerto as a homage to the Finnish tango, which especially during the Second World War developed as a way to express resistance without words, becoming a folk dance. The piece is made for Martin Fröst, who repeatedly combines his clarinet playing with movement, choreography, and dance elements.

After the intermission, Schubert's "Great" C major Symphony, which he completed in 1827, will be performed. With a duration of nearly an hour – almost as long as Beethoven's 9th Symphony composed three years earlier – the work was unusually long and technically demanding for its time. Only eleven years after Schubert's death did Robert Schumann discover the symphony in his estate, and Felix Mendelssohn brought it to its premiere in Leipzig, albeit in a shortened version. Schumann was enthusiastic about its "magnificent lengths," these extended cantilenas, which today give the work a firm place in the symphonic repertoire.
