No entry. Those who visit the exhibition «In The Zone» by Werner Neuhaus are doing something forbidden. They enter an asbestos remediation zone. In the exhibition space in Burgdorf, the artist has recreated a construction site situation – with protective barriers, closures, and the atmosphere of a place where mostly foreign individuals dispose of an invisible danger from our built environment. «In the Zone» focuses on the people behind the protective suits and breathing masks: asbestos removers, their work, their risks, and their life stories. Image, sound, film, and artifacts come together in an exhibition that is meant to be experienced rather than merely viewed. The visitor leaves the safe distance of the exhibition space and becomes part of a zone that is usually closed off to them. At the center is asbestos – a material that has shaped the construction and industrial history of the 20th century and whose consequences are still felt today. However, Neuhaus is less interested in the material than in the people who deal with its remnants. They perform a socially necessary job and often remain invisible. That Werner Neuhaus chooses this topic is no coincidence. The sculptor, who lives in Emmental, has been working with wood for decades and has carved out an independent place in the Swiss art scene with his idiosyncratic, often monumental sculptures. At the same time, he knows the world of asbestos remediation from personal experience and has worked as an asbestos worker himself. This connection between art and the working world gives «In The Zone» an unusual immediacy. «In The Zone» is therefore not just an exhibition about asbestos.
