An old saying goes: "For Saint Martin, every must is wine." In fact, Saint Martin is commemorated on November 11th, when most agricultural work is completed: when the fruit harvest, the preparation of supplies, and the autumn sowing are finished, the wine-making process also ends, hence the above-mentioned proverb. An important moment for the past Ticino, for the winding down of agricultural contracts, the payment of rent, and participation in fairs. Times have changed, but the San Martino Fair in Mendrisio remains an event not to be missed and has been taking place every autumn for almost four hundred years. Between stalls with countless products from the land and brown cows, farmers from the entire region gather to sell, buy, and bargain, in a festive and contagious atmosphere, especially when the sun warms the November days.
