Description

With the advent of the 20th century, groundbreaking technological innovations, new ideological directions, and significant lifestyle changes emerge. In response to these transformations, the appearance of cities also changes. Similar to other areas, architecture seeks to break away from traditional forms; new buildings are to be primarily practical and functional. New materials such as steel, glass, and reinforced concrete are increasingly utilized. From a developmental perspective, the architecture of the First Republic has always been considered exceptionally high quality. The significance of this architecture, which encompasses a wide range of styles and stylistic approaches, is presented not only in the context of developments in South Bohemia but also within the framework of national and global architectural production. Notable South Bohemian architects are dedicated individual profiles. Karel Chochola represents one of the most prominent figures in the South Bohemian architectural scene during the interwar period. He is the author of projects such as the Trilčův weir on the Vltava River and the Brouk and Babka department store in České Budějovice, which is now a cultural monument. František Průša, a student of Professor Josip Plečnik, became the author of several Sokol halls in various regions of former Czechoslovakia as a member of Sokol. Antonín Mečíř served as the city architect primarily in Jindřichův Hradec, known also as a friend and supporter of Ema Destinnová. The aim of the exhibition is not only to present modern architecture in South Bohemia but primarily to highlight its values, which are not perceived as self-evident as historical buildings. The visually rich exhibition has been prepared by a team of experts from the National Heritage Institute, regional expert workplace in České Budějovice, from whose archive it is borrowed.
