Michael William Balfe's opera remains a true rediscovery. This Irish tenor, acclaimed in his time and close to Rossini, also achieved great success as a composer in Victorian England. His experience on the lyrical stage is clearly reflected in his works, especially in "Falstaff," an Italian opera premiered in London in 1838. In the bel canto style, Balfe combines melodic charm, vocal virtuosity, and Shakespearean humor with remarkable ease. On the occasion of this Swiss premiere of a rarely performed work, Franco Trinca returns to TOBS! as a guest conductor.
