Description
The Exhibition of Village Chapels in South Bohemia and Adjacent Moravia showcases the results of long-term research into small sacred architecture conducted by the staff of the National Heritage Institute in České Budějovice. It traces the architectural development of village chapels from the mid-18th century to the present day and highlights the diversity of their architectural solutions and the functions they served in rural communities. Eighteen exhibition panels present the evolution of these structures from simple bell towers, which had the important role of warning residents of fires, hailstorms, or other dangers, to small chapels intended for private and communal prayer, and finally to large village chapels that mimicked the architecture and furnishings of parish churches. The exhibition panels will be complemented by authentic exhibits related to the spiritual mission of the chapels – liturgical items and textiles, architectural plans, and period official correspondence. The central motif of the exhibition is a fictional altar composed of remarkable components from several chapels. The exhibition runs from September 3 to November 2, 2026, in the municipal exhibition hall in České Budějovice.
