Excursions into Architecture: Reissig Villa

Reissig Villa represents the very first completed project of architect Leopold Bauer, a prominent figure in the Vienna art scene. This modern building, bearing the features of geometric secession, was created between 1901 and 1902 and is among the key realizations of the early 20th century in the Czech lands. From the beginning, the villa was designed as a unified whole, in which the exterior and interior harmoniously developed in the spirit of Gesamtkunstwerk, including carefully thought-out details corresponding to the overall concept. Contemporary expert publications referred to it as the most modern house in the entire Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The project "Excursions into Architecture" is a series of excursions by the Gallery of the City of Blansko for 2026, aimed at presenting to the public the transformations of architecture in the first third of the 20th century through exceptionally valuable buildings in Brno and its surroundings, which are usually inaccessible. The program will offer a journey from modernism with elements of geometric secession to simple functionalist forms and will showcase not only aesthetic shifts but also cultural and social changes reflected in new materials, construction principles, and spatial solutions. photo: Tomáš Souček
