Description

»Ex Silens« connects movement, sound, space, and technology to invite the audience into a radically alternative sensory world. Marco Donnarumma has created a ritual that reorders our senses. Music and light generate trance-inducing sound waves. Cochlear implants and AI hearing algorithms become biomachines that amplify sounds from the performer's body to spread them through the bodies of the audience. These new organs, designed and handcrafted by the artist, enlarge a kaleidoscopic sound world that has always existed. “Ex Silens” offers both deaf and hard-of-hearing as well as hearing audience members an audiovisual experience that rethinks concepts like deafness and cyborg. Marco Donnarumma is an artist, stage director, inventor, and theorist. His work confronts normative body politics with uncompromising counter-narratives, where bodies are in tension between control and agency, presence and absence, grace and monstrosity. He is particularly known for creating body-machines that utilize sound, AI, biosensors, and robotics to make the body a site of resistance and transformation. Marco Donnarumma has presented his work in 38 countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas and has won numerous awards, most notably the Prix Ars Electronica's Award of Distinction in Sound Art 2017, the Artist of the Year 2018 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and a Hyundai ZER01NE Creator grant 2024. Donnarumma has been called a pioneer in the performative arts with cutting-edge technology by the Austrian national newspaper Der Standard. His writings have been published in Frontiers in Computer Science, Computer Music Journal, and Performance Research Journal, among others.
