Bass and drums – sometimes that's all it takes to stir up a real commotion. Ester Poly, the duo of Martina Berther and Béatrice Graf, has been playing with this minimal lineup since 2013 and manages to extract surprisingly much from it. Electric bass and drums meet two voices and a music that playfully mixes jazz, rock, punk, noise, and improvisation. Berther and Graf are not just a rhythm section but two independent musicians who motivate, challenge, and surprise each other. Their pieces can groove, crash, tip over, and start all over again. Add to that lyrics that definitely have something to say. Ester Poly are loud, direct, and unconventional – and quite exactly what one might wish for from a good Zollyphon evening.
