"No one can say for sure how many plants there are. Many are endangered, yet new ones are discovered almost daily," writes Kathy Willis, former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London). Scientific estimates suggest there are between 300,000 and 400,000 plant species worldwide. Many of them even thrive under the most extreme conditions or continuously evolve in response to changing living conditions and challenges. The Würth collection also boasts great floral diversity. Vases full of magnificent bouquets by Gabriele Münter and Emil Nolde, blooming meadows by Philipp Bauknecht, reduced natural motifs by Alex Katz, but also dystopian hints of a world out of balance, such as in the overwhelming flower compositions by Marc Quinn – all of them show how differently artists have interpreted the plant world as a motif. Plants in art are much more than decorative objects. They can symbolize beauty and transience, raise spiritual and philosophical questions, highlight ecological aspects, and even convey political messages. The new exhibition at Forum Würth Rorschach is dedicated to the diverse representations of flowers and gardens and invites visitors to explore their secrets and meanings in the changing context of art, culture, and society.
