Description
China, resting within itself for more than 5,000 years, was for a long time a world of its own. Proud of its diverse landscapes, its intellectual wealth, its ancient culture, and its long history, the giant empire considered itself the center of the world – the Middle Kingdom.
About 150 years ago, when Western war fleets appeared off the coasts and forcibly opened China, the conflict with itself and the outside world took the country's breath away. From the forced opening came total isolation: In 1949, with the takeover by the Communists, China again withdrew from the world public. In the 1980s, the country began to open up again on its own. The giant empire once more set out to find the path that leads China from within to the world. The outcome of this ongoing transformation is uncertain: What will China be like? Join us on a virtual journey, experience the diversity of China with a focus on sights and history, nature and culture, people and everyday life. Course leader: Speaker: Hinchi Kong, Dr. nat. sc., Director ChinaHouse Basel
