A Nativity Scene from Provence as a Guest

Description

After its first guest appearance in 2024, the Provençal nativity scene with its over 120 figures returns to the City Museum. Around the birth of Christ unfolds a colorful southern French world: shepherds and craftsmen, market women, musicians, and many other villagers populate the extensive landscape (3.5m x 1.5m). The hand-painted clay figures – called «Santons» in Provence – come from the traditional Marcel Carbonel workshop in Marseille. Rudolf Velhagen introduces the rich nativity tradition of Provence and tells about selected figures and their stories.
