Ecologies of Mind in the Cold War

On the occasion of the international conference "Ecologies of Mind in the Cold War" (October 2-3, eikones), Stadtkino Basel presents a program with films and lectures on cinema, psychopolitics, and environmental research during the Cold War. Cinema has always been both a laboratory and a mediator of psychological knowledge, but also a venue for perception experiments and sensory boundary experiences. During the Cold War, cinema on both sides of the Iron Curtain was used to think and explore psychological processes in connection with ecological relations. In addition to lectures and discussions, Stadtkino Basel will also show a restored version of the milestone of Soviet-Ukrainian scientific film "Searching for Strontium-90" from 1968, rediscovered last year by Volodymyr Prylutskyi in Kyiv, as an international premiere. Alongside the screening, there will be an introduction to the film and film lectures by media scholars Occitane Lacurie and Ute Holl. The event will be conducted in English. Olexii Kuchanskyi is a film historian and freelance curator, eikones, University of Basel. Occitane Lacurie is a media scholar and filmmaker at the École des Arts de la Sorbonne, Paris.
